A former bank building on Wale Street gives this central hotel its marble columns and grand public rooms. It is a comfortable base for the Castle, museums and the Company’s Garden.

Day 01Fortress and folklore
Start inside the Castle of Good Hope
Visit the castle during its published opening hours and use the on-site interpretation to understand the fortress, its courtyards and the people whose lives were shaped here. Built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679, it belongs to a difficult colonial history as well as the city’s architectural story.
Leave time to notice the contrast between the open courtyards and enclosed passages. The ghost stories add atmosphere, but they do not establish that a supernatural event occurred or grant access to closed sections. Finish the day with dinner back in the central city.
Plan ahead: The visitor page currently lists 09:00–16:00 opening and a 15:15 last ticket sale. Check before travel, especially around holidays and events; its online ticket facility is marked as coming soon.
Spend the morning with the permanent exhibition at District Six Museum. Personal memories, neighbourhood history and the effects of forced removal give this day its focus. Check the museum’s current visitor arrangements and ask about a guided visit when planning.
Continue at a gentle pace through the central city, with a lunch stop and time to browse shops or galleries. This is a day for listening and looking, rather than rushing between a list of supposed hauntings.
Plan ahead: The permanent museum is at 25A Buitenkant Street; the Homecoming Centre is a separate nearby address. Confirm which location your booked activity uses.
If your visit falls on Thursday or Friday, make time for Rust en Vreugd. Iziko presents a selection from the William Fehr works on paper in this historic house. The city tourism board also recounts local stories of footsteps and figures seen at the property.
Reorder the days to match the house’s limited opening schedule. If it does not fit, spend the day around the Company’s Garden and choose an open Iziko museum from the official programme, then settle into a final unhurried meal.
Plan ahead: Rust en Vreugd currently lists Thursday and Friday, 09:00–16:00. Check Iziko’s page again before travelling; the house is not a nightly ghost-tour venue.
The castle’s surviving fabric dates to the Dutch East India Company period. Its interpretation is a starting point for learning about colonial power, military life and the people affected by both; the wider itinerary adds the much later history of District Six.
Cape Town Tourism recounts stories of voices and footsteps at the castle, a disappearing black dog and apparitions associated with former residents. These are attributed ghost traditions. At Rust en Vreugd, it describes similar tales of unexplained footsteps and figures; the public visit remains a museum experience.
Rust en Vreugd has a limited Thursday–Friday schedule. Check all three official visitor pages and reorder the itinerary around the dates you can actually enter.
Use the correct museum address
District Six Museum’s permanent exhibition and its Homecoming Centre occupy different buildings. Follow the address on your activity confirmation.
Plan evening transport
Ask your hotel for current local route advice and use arranged transport for late returns. A short distance on the map is not a guarantee of a suitable walking route.
