Leap Castle is a private home as well as one of Ireland’s best-known settings for ghost stories. Visits are by prior appointment, so build the trip around confirmation rather than turning up at the gate.

Birr makes the practical base: its castle demesne, Georgian centre and compact lodging cluster give the itinerary substance even when a Leap Castle appointment is unavailable. A car or booked driver is needed for Leap and Lough Boora.

Get your bearings

The sights. The stays. One map.

Birr holds the main hotel cluster and is the best fallback day. Leap Castle lies north-east by road and Lough Boora farther north-west; pins locate the sites, but they do not describe private entrances or imply public access.

A good place to come back to

Where to stay near the sights

Stay in Birr for restaurants and the castle demesne on foot, or choose a rural B&B for quiet and parking. Keeraun Hill is in Banagher rather than Birr, so it suits a driving itinerary and adds River Shannon country at the cost of a longer return from Leap Castle.

01For leisure facilities in Birr

County Arms Birr

Moorpark, Birr, County Offaly, R42 Y568, Ireland

Hotel

A full-service hotel on the edge of Birr with a restaurant, indoor pool and spa facilities. It is the most facility-rich choice in this small-town set.

Checked 2026-09-10: Booking.com 8.5/10 from 396 reviews.

Why consider it
On-site parking and leisure facilities help on a road-based itinerary with uncertain weather.
Choose the room carefully
Choose the exact family or double configuration you need; the hotel does not promise a castle outlook.
The tradeoff
It sits outside the tight Georgian centre, so central restaurants and Birr Castle begin with a longer walk or short drive.

Checked 2026-09-10: Booking.com 7.6/10 from 220 reviews.

Why consider it
The central address suits the Birr Castle day and guests who prefer a conventional hotel reception.
Choose the room carefully
Ask for a quieter room position if weekend functions matter to your sleep; no view category is assumed.
The tradeoff
The checked Booking facilities and value scores are more modest than several small B&Bs in this set.

Why consider it
Its official site confirms multiple room types and a central address close to Birr’s principal sights.
Choose the room carefully
Choose the exact single, double, twin or family room; garden outlooks vary by inventory.
The tradeoff
Restaurant opening is limited to selected days, so check the current schedule rather than building every dinner around it.

Checked 2026-09-10: Booking.com 9.1/10 from 281 reviews.

Why consider it
The central position is well suited to the demesne and a car-free evening in town.
Choose the room carefully
Rooms differ in size and decoration; choose by the named layout rather than the building’s overall photographs.
The tradeoff
The current Booking policy says children are not accepted, making this an adult-only option for planning purposes.

The Ring Farmhouse

Checked 2026-09-10: Booking.com 9.5/10 from 383 reviews.

Why consider it
Family rooms and outdoor space make it a practical alternative to central townhouses.
Choose the room carefully
Match double, twin or family inventory to the party; rural setting does not guarantee a named landscape view.
The tradeoff
A car is effectively required for the town centre and every itinerary stop.

06For Banagher and the River Shannon

Keeraun Hill

Keeraun Hill, Mullaghakaraun, Banagher, County Offaly, R42 KW44, Ireland

Farmhouse B&B

A small farmhouse B&B on the edge of Banagher with ensuite rooms, breakfast and parking. It makes sense for travelers adding the River Shannon to the trip.

Checked 2026-09-10: Booking.com 9.8/10 from 169 reviews.

Why consider it
The official site places the property a short walk from Banagher and confirms four ensuite guest rooms.
Choose the room carefully
Choose the exact double or family configuration; ask the booking channel only for amenities stated on that room.
The tradeoff
Banagher is around a separate road journey from Birr and substantially farther from Leap Castle than the five Birr options.

Day 01Leap Castle, if confirmed

Enter the story by appointment

Travel to Leap Castle only after receiving a confirmed appointment. The restored tower remains a private home, and the owner-led visit is the setting in which its family history, violence and famous ghost tales are shared.

If no appointment is confirmed, keep the gate off the itinerary and use the day for Birr Castle Demesne and the Georgian town. The trip still works without treating private property as a drop-in attraction.

Plan ahead: Do not arrive unannounced. Current visitor information describes access as appointment-only and there is no dependable walk-up timetable.

Day 02Gardens and science

Explore Birr Castle Demesne

Walk through Birr Castle’s gardens and Historic Science Centre, where the Parsons family’s scientific work and the great nineteenth-century telescope give the day a very different kind of wonder.

The castle is still a private family home. Seasonal interior tours are a separate, limited experience; general admission focuses on the demesne, gardens and science displays.

Plan ahead: Check the official calendar. Interior castle tours are seasonal, have age conditions and are best pre-booked when offered.

Day 03Bog landscape

Walk or cycle Lough Boora

Drive to Lough Boora Discovery Park for marked trails through a landscape shaped first by peat extraction and then by rehabilitation, sculpture and wildlife habitat.

Choose a route that fits the weather and daylight, then return through Birr or continue toward Banagher. The wide horizons make a calm final chapter after the castle stories.

Plan ahead: Trails are open daily, but visitor facilities and parking hours vary seasonally; check the official plan-your-visit page before setting out.

History and the stories told

A private castle with a public legend

Leap Castle’s chronology is contested in its earliest centuries, but its tower is tied to the O’Bannon and O’Carroll families and later endured destruction and restoration. Its turbulent family history and the room known as the Bloody Chapel supply the historical frame for the visit.

Stories of a murdered cleric, a hidden oubliette and an elemental presence have made Leap one of Ireland’s most frequently described haunted castles. Tourism Ireland presents them as ghost stories and storytelling tradition; a visit offers history and folklore, not proof of paranormal events.

A little preparation

Before you go

Treat Leap as appointment-only

Leap Castle is a private home without reliable walk-up hours. Include it only after a specific visit is confirmed.

Keep a complete fallback

Birr Castle Demesne and the Georgian town can fill Day 1 if Leap is unavailable; no private gate or entrance should be approached without permission.

Drive the outer loop

Leap Castle and Lough Boora are separate rural road trips from Birr. Arrange a car or driver and allow for local conditions.

Separate demesne from house tour

General admission at Birr covers the gardens, demesne and science centre. Interior house tours are seasonal and separately limited.

Check Lough Boora facilities

The trails operate daily, while the visitor centre and car park follow published seasonal hours.

Sources and how we chose these stays

Prepared by Haunted Hotels from published attraction, tourism and hotel sources, checked 10 September 2026. The itinerary is an editorial suggestion. Ghost stories are attributed traditions, not independently verified supernatural events. The nearby stays are selected for their location and practical fit, not a claim of paranormal activity or a first-hand inspection.

Use the official links for current tickets, visiting arrangements and hotel details. Properties and sights are mapped from the source locations recorded during research; pins do not establish an accessible route.
