Treat stories about séances, spirits and endless building as part of the site’s evolving legend. Sarah Winchester did not publicly explain her design decisions, and the house’s timeline identifies an 1895 newspaper story as the earliest known claim that she built to avoid death.

Sarah Winchester bought an eight-room farmhouse near San Jose in 1886. Construction and remodeling continued until her death in 1922, producing a 24,000-square-foot house with 160 rooms; earthquake damage in 1906 led to demolition of upper portions.
Rumors circulated during her lifetime, but her own motive remains unknown. The official timeline dates the first known written claim that she built to avoid death to an 1895 newspaper story. Tales that a medium ordered continuous construction or that firearm victims haunted her are therefore presented here as folklore, not established biography or paranormal evidence.
